NOT SO EXCITING BUT EFFECTIVE LEASH HANDLING TIP
Overexcitement is an issue that’s usually created by humans. There are so many ways we inadvertently (and sometimes on purpose) teach our dogs that excitement is the default way to be. Then clients will call me asking for help because their dogs don’t know how to be calm! Nurturing calmness should be default. Then teach when it’s appropriate to be excited. BTW, this takes MANY repetitions of practice and can take a long time to undo if excitement is all the dog’s been practicing. These are simple leash work exercises I teach to help owners with dogs that pull. The idea is that direction changes redirect the dogs focus on the handler, thus creating more relevance. The dog then learns to follow on walks instead of leading (pulling) and directing where to go. The human can then lead and provide direction as well as breaks. Penny is a very nervous dog. As you can see she’s terrified of being in the pool, even with Mom holding her. Most people might see this and say “poor baby”, and feel sorry for her. I see it as an opportunity to help a dog gain confidence. This is just a short clip of Penny’s first time in the pool, but her Mom did an amazing job showing patience and leadership that day. It took a long time to get her in and it took a long time getting her to be somewhat calm to show her the way out. And she did multiple reps! The reality is that Penny may never love being in the water, however that’s not a reason to avoid using the pool as an opportunity to build confidence and trust. This is the kind of exercise that takes A LOT of repetitions, over days and possibly weeks. Even then, Penny still may never enjoy the pool. But if we can teach her that the pool is not a place to panic, and that she can always find her way out in case she falls in, well then that is really all we can reasonably ask for.
